Annotation

Published on Saturdays, Guangzhou Li Bai Liu (‘Guangzhou Saturday’) was probably modelled on Shanghai’s Saturday (Lai Bai Liu). Its content included serialised novels, short fiction, works of calligraphy and painting, jokes, poems, ci, and gossip about sing-song girls and ‘flowers of the opera stage’ (actresses)’. Articles were written in both classical and vernacular Chinese, classical Chinese was more common. Its ‘New Introductory Course to Sound Metres’ column promoted the use of Cantonese for writing poetry.
