Annotation
Screen Monthly’s editor, named as Su Min, was possibly Huang Sumin, a script-writer, as well as the editor of Lingsing. Judging from the only issue still known to exist – a copy of Issue 8 with several pages missing – this magazine with a colour frontpage covered Hollywood movies and ‘national films’, with extensive use of movie stills, many of which filled entire pages. The surviving issue, with several pages missing, features articles about ‘national sound films’, The Smiling Lieutenant (Ernst Lubitsch, 1931) and vampire films, and several pieces on the technology of sound filmmaking and installation of sound equipment in theatres offering a valuable insight into the arrival of films with sound in Chinese cinema.
